How I Manage My Ichthyosis Vulgaris (And Why Lotion Alone Wasn't Fixing It)

How I Manage My Ichthyosis Vulgaris (And Why Lotion Alone Wasn't Fixing It)

Some of y’all thought this was just dry skin.

It wasn’t.

This is ichthyosis vulgaris, a genetic skin condition that causes your skin to hold onto dead skin instead of shedding it normally. Translation? Scaling, flaking, rough texture, and skin that never feels fully moisturized no matter how much lotion you use.

And yes… I'm talking about my own legs.

Ichthyosis vulgaris causing scale buildup before I changed my routine.

Here’s what most people get wrong:

They treat ichthyosis like regular dry skin.

So they:
• Use random lotions
• Try scrubs
• Use harsh soaps
• Moisturize more

And then wonder why nothing changes.

Because this condition isn't just dryness.

It’s a skin shedding problem plus a barrier problem.

So the routine has to fix both.

Instead of throwing products at my skin, I followed a structure:

Exfoliate → Hydrate → Repair → Seal

Not 15 products.
Not trends.
Just strategy.

Step 1 — Clean without making things worse

Product: Donkey Milk & Chamomile Soap

Most soaps make ichthyosis worse because they strip the barrier.

This one works because it:
• Cleans without overdrying
• Supports moisture balance
• Calms irritation
• Doesn't cause rebound dryness

This matters because harsh cleansing can make scaling worse long term.

Step 2 — Fix the buildup problem

Product: Lactic Acid Body Serum

This is where the real change started.

Ichthyosis causes dead skin to stick around. Lactic acid helps dissolve that buildup while also hydrating.

This step helps:
• Smooth rough texture
• Improve shedding
• Pull water into skin
• Support flexibility

This is why scrubs alone usually fail. They don't fix the shedding process.

Step 3 — Add hydration before sealing

Product: Sea Moss & Centella Calming Gel Toner

Most people skip hydration and jump straight to butter.

That’s backwards.

Dry skin lacks:
• Water
• Lipids

Sea moss helps hydrate.
Centella helps calm inflammation.

This step makes everything applied after work better.

Step 4 — Repair the barrier

Product: Donkey Milk & Apple Body Butter

Barrier repair is where long-term improvement happens.

Donkey milk helps provide:
• Fatty acids
• Vitamins
• Nutrient support

This helps skin behave more normally instead of constantly flaking.

Step 5 — Seal everything in (MOST IMPORTANT)

Products used(you can use any one):
Vaseline
Aquaphor
CeraVe Healing Ointment

This step stops moisture from escaping.

Without sealing, hydration evaporates and you're back at square one by morning.

This was honestly one of the biggest difference makers.

After doing this consistently, my skin became:

• Smoother
• Less flaky
• More comfortable
• Easier to maintain

Skin after consistent barrier repair routine.

What actually helped:

Not:
"Moisturize more."

But:

Exfoliate
Hydrate
Repair
Seal

Structure beats random routines every time.

This structure also helps:

• Severe dry skin
• Eczema prone skin
• Barrier damage
• Chronic flaking
• Retinoid irritation
• Texture issues

If your skin:
Feels tight
Looks flaky
Never stays moisturized
Gets rough quickly

You probably don't need more products.

You need the right structure.
